SHINKUBA BAGRAT VASILEVICH

He's an Abkhazian poet, prose writer.
He was born on 12 May 1917 in the village of Chlou in the Ochamchir district of the Abkhazian ASSR.
From 1926 to 1928 he studied at the Chlou rural primary schools.
From 1930 he studied at the Jgyard rural seven-year school.
In 1935 he graduated from the Sukhumi Pedagogical Technical School; in the same year one of his first poems, «Courage», was published.
In 1938, the author's first book of poems, «First Songs» was published.
In 1939, he graduated from the Philological Faculty of the Gorky Sukhumi State Pedagogical Institute.
In 1939-1943, he worked as a teacher and editor in the newspaper «Apsny Kapsh» («Red Abkhazia»), as well as in the Marr Abkhazian Research Institute of Language and History. N. Y. Marr.
In 1944, he completed his postgraduate studies at the Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR.
In 1945, he defended his thesis as a candidate of philological sciences.
From 1954-1958 he was chairman of the Union of Writers of Abkhazia.
In 1958-1979 he served as Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Abkhaz ASSR.
Three times - in 1959, 1978, 1984. - he was elected a deputy to the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.
In 1989, he was elected People's Deputy of the USSR.
He was Chairman of the Commission of the Council of Ministers of Abkhazia on awarding the D. I. Gulia State Prize of Abkhazia. D. I. Gulia.
In 1997, he was elected academician of the Academy of Sciences of Abkhazia.
He wrote poetry, prose, and was involved in translating poems from Russian, Georgian and European poetry.
