He's a novelist, a poet, a screenwriter.
He was born on 6 March 1929 in Sukhum.
He graduated from the Russian school in Sukhum in 1947.
That same year, 1947, he entered the Moscow Library Institute.
Between 1951 and 1954 he was a student at the Gorky Literary Institute.
В 1952 г. было опубликовано первое стихотворение - «В горах Абхазии».
In 1954-1955 he was a correspondent of the editorial board of the newspaper «Bryansk Komsomolets» (Bryansk).
In 1956-1957 he was a correspondent of the editorial office of the newspaper «Kurskaya Pravda» (Kursk).
In 1957, he transferred to the Abkhazian branch of Gosizdat.
That same year, 1957, he became a member of the Union of Soviet Writers.
In 1961 the last Abkhazian collection «Children of the Black Sea» was published.
In 1964-1969 three poetry collections were published in Moscow.
In 1964, he took part in the collective detective story «He Who Laughs».
In 1969, the first film adaptation of the author's prose was released - the film «Time of Happy Finds».
In 1971-1973 he was a senior lecturer at the Department of Artistic Translation of the Gorky Literary Institute.
He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in 2012 and 2013.
He wrote in Russian.
