
BEBIA PLATON HUAMPOVICH

He is a novelist, prose writer and publicist. He is the author of a large number of poems, ballads, poems, short stories and novels, novels, published more than 25 collections. People's Writer of Abkhazia, Commander of the Order ‘Akhidz-Apsha’ III degree.
He was born on 5 October 1935 in the village of Kutol.
In 1954 he studied for four years at the Jgyard eight-year school, then he graduated from the Kutol eight-year school and the Tamish eleven-year school. He started writing poetry at the age of 15.
In 1959 he graduated from the A. M. Gorky Sukhumi State Pedagogical Institute and in 1968 from the A. M. Gorky Literary Institute in Moscow.
He had been publishing since 1952. He wrote in Abkhazian language. He translated into Abkhazian poems by R. Burns, S. A. Yesenin, G. Lorca, ‘The Bronze Horseman’ by A. S. Pushkin, S. V. Mikhalkov, E. A. Yevtushenko, N. Hikmet, L. Ukrainka, B. M. Pachev, B. G. Kagermazov, K. Sh. Kuliev, Sh. S. Akobia, stories by Ch. T. Aitmatov ‘Meeting’, ‘Son of a Fighter’ and others.
He is a member of the Union of Writers of the USSR since 1965, the Union of Writers of Abkhazia and the Union of Writers of Russia since 1999, Honoured Worker of Culture of Abkhazia, winner of the D. I. Gulia State Prize of Abkhazia since 2007 (for translating poems by R. Burns). People's Poet of Abkhazia since 2020.
He worked in the editorial offices of the newspaper «Apsny Kapsh» («Red Abkhazia»), the magazine «Amtsabz» («Flame»). From 1979 he worked as an editor, deputy director, editor-in-chief, and director of «Alashara» Publishing House. His works were published in collective collections, magazines ‘Alashara’, ‘Amtsabz’, ‘Zvezda’, ‘Our Contemporary’, ‘Young Guard’; newspapers ‘Apsny Kapsh’, ‘Apsny’, ‘Bzyb’, ‘Etsvajaa’ (‘Constellation’), ‘Sovetskaya Abkhazia’, ‘Literaturnaya Gazeta’, ‘Literaturnaya Abkhazia’, literary collection ‘Ertsakhu’ and others. Many of the poet's poems are included in the 2nd volume of ‘Anthology of Abkhazian poetry. XX century’ (Akua-Moscow, 2001; reprinted in Akua-Moscow, 2009).
Platon Huampovich Bebia's works were translated into Russian, Ukrainian, Armenian and other languages. A number of collections of his poems, poems and prose works have been published in Russian translation.
He died on 26.09.2021.
