BARATELIA NURI TARASOVICH

He was born on 05.05.1912 in the village of Tamysh of the Kodori section of Sukhumi district, now Ochamchira district of Abkhazia.
Baratelia is an Abkhazian writer, novelist, known as a children's author. He is a member of the USSR Union of Writers and the Union of Writers.
He studied at the Sukhumi mountain school.
In 1935, he started working in the editorial office of the newspaper «Apsny Kapsh» («Red Abkhazia»), even before completing his studies at school.
In 1935-1939, he was editor of the Ochamchira district newspaper «Abolshevik mua» («Bolshevik Way»). Then he returned to the editorial office of «Apsny Kapsh», where he headed the party department.
At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 he went to the front; he was a prisoner of war, from which he escaped and joined the partisans. Subsequently, because of being a prisoner of war, he was arrested and imprisoned; he was released in the mid 1950s. He was awarded the Order of Patriotic War II degree by the Ministry of Defence of the USSR on 06.04.1985.
After returning to Abkhazia Baratelia Nuri Tarasovich started working in the children's magazine «Amtsabz» («Flame»).
He retired in 1971. His stories and fairy tales were published in the magazines «Alashara» («Light»), «Amtsabz», newspapers «Apsny Kapsh», «Sovetskaya Abkhazia» and others. He has published more than 10 books in the Abkhaz language. He translated into Abkhazian the stories of Abazi writer Z. K. Khachukov and Kabardian prose writer A. T. Shortanov, which were published in the «Alashara» magazine (1965. No. 3; 1972. No. 4). T. Shortanov, which were published in the magazine Alashara (1965. No. 3; 1972. No. 4).
He died on 19.04.2000.
