ARGUN ALEXEI HUTOVICH

Abkhazian scientist, public figure, writer, Doctor of Art History, Professor, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2001), Honoured Art Worker of the Abkhaz ASSR (1982), member of the Union of Writers of Abkhazia and Russia, member of the Union of Composers of Abkhazia; Minister of Culture of the Abkhaz ASSR (1971-1980); deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Abkhaz ASSR of three convocations (1975-1990).
Born on 10 April 1937 in Tkuarchal, Abkhazian ASSR .
Graduated from Tkuarchal secondary school No. 1.
From 1956 to 1960 he worked as director of the Ochamchir Palace of Culture and at the same time headed the propaganda department of the newspaper «Path to Communism».
From 1960 to 1965 he studied at the Moscow State Institute of Theatre Art named after A. Lunacharsky and there he did postgraduate studies (1965-1969) and doctoral studies (PhD thesis 1970).
From 1970 to 1973 he worked as director of the Abkhaz State Museum, and from 1973 to 1975 - as director of the Order of the Badge of Honour of the Abkhaz State Drama Theatre named after S. Chanba .
From 1971 to 1980, he worked as Minister of Culture of the Abkhaz ASSR, after which he was Head of the Art Department of the D.I. Gulia Institute of Humanitarian Research of the Abkhaz Academy of Sciences of Abkhazia. D. I. Gulia of the Academy of Sciences of Abkhazia.
In 1983, he defended his doctoral thesis at the Moscow All-Union Research Institute of Art History (Doctor of Art History degree).
From 1975 to 1990 he was a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Abkhaz ASSR and a member of the Abkhaz Regional Committee of the Communist Party, Chairman of the Abkhaz branch of the All-Union Peace Defence Committee. He was a member of the Union of Composers of the Abkhaz ASSR.
In 1987 he was awarded the title of Professor of Philosophy, and since 1971 he has been lecturing on aesthetics at the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Studies of the Abkhaz State University.
In 2001, he was elected an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
In 2007, the Government of Abkhazia awarded him the Order «Akhidz-Apsha» of the II degree for his scientific and creative work and for the education of the younger generation. He was a member of the Union of Writers of the Abkhaz ASSR and the USSR.
He wrote several collections of plays and short stories published in separate books in Sukhum, Tbilisi and Moscow. His plays were staged in the theatres of the peoples of the USSR (Abkhazian, Kabardian, Circassian, Armenian, Georgian, Ukrainian), as well as in Poland and Czechoslovakia. He is the author of more than 200 scientific articles on Abkhazian art published in journals, collections and encyclopaedias and published in the former USSR and foreign countries.
Died on 1 July 2008 in Sukhum, Abkhazia.
Argun A.Kh. is the author of two textbooks for ASU - on aesthetics «In the World of Aesthetics» and «Artistic Culture of the Abkhaz». He has written more than 35 books on various fields of art and literature. He is the author of a book about the Abkhazian-Georgian war - «Abkhazia: Hell in Paradise» (Sukhum, 1994).
