
ALAMIA GENNADY SHALIKOVICH

He was born on 24 July 1949 in the village of Kutol, Ochamchira district, Abkhazian ASSR.
Abkhazian poet, public and political figure. Member of the Union of Writers of the USSR (1973), the Union of Writers of Abkhazia, the Union of Writers of Russia (1999). Writes in the Abkhaz language.
In 1966 he graduated from Kutol secondary school No. 1 named after I. A. Kogonia.
In 1969 he entered the Gorky Literary Institute in Moscow.
While studying at the Literary Institute of the Union of Writers of the Soviet Union, he met his future translator and co-author Denis Chachkhalia.
In 1973-1974. - Correspondent, then Head of the Letters Department of the city newspaper Ramenskoye, Moscow Region.
After graduating from the institute, he returned to Abkhazia.
In 1974 he was sent to work as a teacher in his native village of Kutol, where he worked for two years. He worked as head of the department of the Literary and Memorial Museum of Dmitry Gulia.
His works were published in the newspaper Apsny Kapsh ("Red Abkhazia"), magazines Alashara ("Light"), Amtsabz ("Flame"), in the second volume of the Anthology of Abkhazian Poetry. XX century" (Akua-Moscow, 2001, reprinted in one volume - 2009) and others. He is the author of more than ten poetry collections. Gennady Alamia's works have been translated into Russian, English, French, Polish, Bulgarian, Armenian, Arabic, Ukrainian, Moldovan and other languages.
In addition to writing his own works, Gennady Alamia proved himself a talented translator. He translated into Abkhazian "King Lear" and "Julius Caesar" by W. Shakespeare, "Life is a Dream" by Calderon de la Barca, "Woe from Wit" by A. Griboyedov (these works were staged on the stage of the Abkhazian State Drama Theatre named after S. Ya. These works were staged on the stage of the S. Y. Chanba Abkhazian State Drama Theatre), poems and fairy tales by A. Pushkin, works by A. Blok, Garcia Lorca, M. Svetlov, Ossetian poets K. Khetagurov, D. Alborta, Adygean poet N. N. Bagov, Abazi poet M. Kh. Chikatuev, Armenian poet G. Emin and others.
In March 2019, the premiere of Romeo and Juliet, based on Shakespeare's play, was announced at the Abkhaz Drama Theatre; the author of the translation into Abkhazian is Gennady Alamia.
Gennady Alamia is the author of the words of the new Anthem of the Republic of Abkhazia, written on the basis of Abkhaz folklore.
He is also the author of a number of articles and essays.
